Southgate: Recovering from a setback

Confidence crippled after a mistake? Don't worry, get back to your best, with help from former England defender Gareth Southgate
It seemed England were destined to win Euro 96. The Three Lions held their nerve to beat Spain on penalties. They put Holland to the sword. With the sun shining, football was coming home, until Germany decided to ruin it all.

Well, that and the fact Gareth Southgate missed the crucial fifth penalty in the semi-final shoot-out, giving ‪Andreas Möller‬ the chance to send his team through to the final. And he did of course, before puffing out his chest and marching arrogantly towards the distraught England fans.

Southgate was obviously devastated, but he didn't let it define him. He went on to win 48 more caps for England (57 in total), featuring in the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championships.

He also went on to play in an FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup final. And star in a tongue-in-cheek Pizza Hut advert.

Southgate also tried his hand at management with Middlesbrough, but was sacked in his third season, after taking the team down to the Championship. Another setback he has bounced back from.

To learn from the man who has shrugged off disappointments and continued to further his career, hit play and take note.

Gareth Southgate was speaking at the launch of the Carlsberg Pub Cup, a nationwide five aside competition for players of all standards. To register your pub visit www.carlsberg.co.uk/pubcup. Carlsberg is The Official Beer of The England Football Team and sponsor of UEFA EURO 2012.
