Defending made easy with Phil Jones: Part one
Defy the odds and shackle two attackers on your own, with defensive tips from Manchester United and England defender, Phil Jones
Outnumbered, helpless and exposed. Being the last defender in a 2 v 1 situation is an unforgiving position to find yourself in.
Do you try and tackle the player in possession, leaving them with the simple task of passing to their team-mate? Or do you bide your time and try to defend the space, hoping reinforcements will arrive? Or do you concentrate on marking the spare man, leaving the stop-stopping to your goalkeeper? It's a no win situation, or is it?
Manchester United and England defender Phil Jones believes you've got to stop the immediate danger and time your challenge to perfection.
"I would follow the person with the ball and try to corner them, stopping them from passing it to the other player," Jones told FFT.
"Timing is key. As soon as you see a loose touch from the player in possession, that’s when you get into a position to show him away from goal and block off the pass."
