A defence can plan to go man-for-man against the opposition's attack, but a mobile strike force, capable of playing across the line, can scupper that strategy.

When versatile forwards swap positions and seamlessly slip into different roles, defenders are pulled out of position, creating holes in the back four.
 
Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes the only way to cope with a mobile forward line is to adapt, communicate and work as a team.

“Talking is essential in football: if they’re switching, just tell your centre-back partner,” the England international told FFT.

“There’s only so far you can go with your man – don’t be afraid to pass him on to someone else if you have to.”
